The route begins at the City Walls, which surround the medieval village of Barbara with their characteristic 15th-century hexagonal shape. Here you can admire the corner towers, the central keep known as “Torrione” and the remains of the ancient defensive positions, witnesses to centuries of history and the strategic position of the village between the Misa and Nevola rivers.
From the Castle, through the Porta dell’Arco di Santa Barbara, you enter the heart of the village: here winds the medieval village, an evocative square that leads to the first religious stop, the Church of Santa Barbara. Rebuilt in 1694, the church houses works of great value, including the wooden statue of Saint Barbara and paintings by Claudio Ridolfi, offering a first glimpse into the spirituality and artistic tradition of the village.
Continuing along the medieval streets, you reach Piazza Padella, one of the smallest squares in Italy. From here, the route leads to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1787 based on a design by architect Francesco Ciarafoni. The church is a true treasure trove of art, with masterpieces by Correggio, Paolo Gismondi, Giovanni Pirri and Francesco Trevisani. Inside, the octagonal baptistery, a symbol of resurrection and eternity, and the Sacred Vestments Museum, where precious liturgical objects from the 15th to the 18th century are preserved, deserve attention.
From the church, a short walk leads to the Ghetto and the Piazza External area. From here, you can continue to the traces of the ancient prisons and the old slaughterhouse, witnesses to civil life in the past.
Continuing along the village, you reach “Il Portone”, an arch from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding countryside and Mount Conero in the distance, a symbol of the bond between Barbara and her landscape. The route ends at Pozzo da Butto, a historic public well that tells the story of the inhabitants’ daily lives and the history of water resources over the centuries.
This itinerary allows you to discover Barbara step by step, combining art, history, architecture and breathtaking views, in a complete journey into the heart of the village.
